AIMS

The purpose of the Worcester Bromyard Leominster Greenway is to create a walking, cycling and horse-riding track along, or near as possible to, the course of the original Worcester Bromyard Leominster railway.

History

The proposed line received Royal Assent on 1 August 1861, authorising a single track 24.5-mile (39.4 km) railway line from a point near Bransford Road on the West Midland Railway, through Bromyard to the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway at Leominster.

Current Condition

After being closed, most of the line was sold off or gifted back to the original private landowners. North beyond Stoke Prior Halt, the track ran parallel for over a mile to the Shrewsbury and Hereford line, which was later redeveloped as part of the Leominster bypass.

Strategy

An ever-growing project group of local volunteers and enthusiasts has got together having formed a formal entity (Community Interest Company) with which to spearhead this project. We have formed a working partnership with the cycle charity Sustrans. They are experienced in delivering this type of project (recently they opened the Valley route near Padstow, Cornwall).

Future Use

It does not take a great leap of imagination to see how the disused railway line from Leominster to Worcester could be adapted to create a very valuable community asset. The route of the railway is to a large extent still very well defined.
